Our first winter in Canada was the happiest we have ever experienced. We were living in the countryside then and had just arrived from Hong Kong that autumn.

One evening in mid December snow began to fall. When we looked out of the window and saw that it was snowing, we all cheered. It was the first snow we had ever seen and we were excited. We could hardly wait for the snow to stop so that we could go out to play. Next morning when we woke up, it was still snowing. We switched on the radio and learned that more than ten inches of snow had fallen during the night and that since the roads were blocked there would be no school that day. We jumped up and down for joy and begged mother to let us go outside to play in the snow. She said we could go out after breakfast if we dressed ourselves warmly and promised to come back as soon as we felt cold.

When we went out, the snow had almost stopped. The roads, paths, gardens, and playing grounds were all hidden under a white blanket of soft snow. It was the most beautiful sight we had ever seen. Just then, we saw some neighbors’ children coming out to play. We ran over to join them. Together we built a snowman and a snow house. After that, we took turns sliding down a hill on a large piece of card-board. We were having so much fun when supper time came. Mother almost had to force us to go in and eat.

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country’s economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the wealth and happiness of local inhabitants.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities(配套设施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers(下水道) to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

51.

Too much tourism can cause all these problems EXCEPT ______.

A. a bad effect on other industries

B. a change of tourist’s customs

C. over-crowdedness of the places of interest

D. pressure on traffic

54.

It can be inferred from the passage that ____.

A. the author doesn’t like tourism developing so fast

B. local people will benefit from tourist attraction

C. other parts of a country’s economy won’t benefit from tourism much

D. we can’t build too many support facilities.

55.

The author thinks it is good for local people to know that tourism will ____.

A. waste a lot of money

B. weaken their economy

C. help establish their customs

D. help improve their life

A woman who took an unpaid leave of absence from work to see her husband off to war has been fired (解雇) after failing to show up for her part-time job the day following his departure(起程).

“It was a shock,” said Suzette Boler, a 40-year-old mother of three. “I was hurt. I felt deserted by people I thought cared for me. I sat down on the floor and cried for probably two hours.” Officials at her former workplace said that Boler was dismissed when she didn’t report to work the day after she said goodbye to her husband of 22 years. “We gave her enough time to get back to work,” Clark Galloway, president of operations for Benefit Management. He added that other causes were included but he didn’t say more.

On Oct. 16, Boler went with her husband, Jerry Boler, 45, to an Indianapolis-area airfield, where her and others gathered to be sent to Fort Dix, N.J. and then to Iraq. Suzette Boler had received permission to take off work.

When Boler returned home from Indiana on the night of Oct. 16, she felt tired and told her bosses that she would try to return on Oct. 17, but if she could not, she would surely be back on Oct. 18. But on the afternoon of Oct. 17, she received a call from work telling her to come in the following day and get her things because she was fired. D. Completely because she was late for her work.

58.
